I'm not involved enough to tell you what the ETA will be and what the
competition will be at that time. The major competitor at this stage
is BSGPSPDA, which downloads raster images and consequently does not
support routing.
I've spelt out my concerns on the 'talk' page : It's a lot simpler to
write a viewer of precompiled indexed downloaded maps and then expect
users to update their maps periodically (e.g. monthly). It will be
quite rare for a mobile protocol to provide a user with information
that will not be on the precompiled map he would otherwise use.
Futhermore, there are many satnav like devices that do not have a
network connection. Actually I would very much like to see what the
installed base of mobile devices are (Garmin, N95, WinPDA, Neo1973
etc).
