I think the researching of Easter eggs fall under "fair use" / "fair dealing".
I think the process of "using a copyrighted map to find new locations
to expore" can fall under "fair use" / "fair dealing" because it the
information content is so low (measure in bits). But IMHO it is also
protected under the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_three-step_test
:
* Plotting GPS traces over a copyrighted map is normal because so many
software products allow you to do it. And the desire to explore new
locations is only human, as the popularity of games like geocaching
proves.
* Doing so does not unreasonably prejudice the legitimate interests of
the rights holder because the hard work remains.
