The OSM is community effort, based on voluteers-users contributions.
It is in our best interests to minimize hassles for the users willing
to contribute. It is good that there is flash-based map editing
(albeit slow, clumsy and suffering from other drawbacks), but if we
can do more, why not? There is limited number of users who a ready to
cope with all steps, currently required to maintain the maps. And
there are a lot more users that, given easy interface, will
contribute.
If we want to have full, updated maps, client software (at least
officially endorsed one) must allow end to end map editing (street
names, directions, parks, signs, etc) and allow standalone (with no
desktop in the middle) upload to server.
