Before I begin, I 100% support the improvements to JOSM in getting rid
of the modes.

I can't get this to work at all actually.

I would have a separate select tool. It's all to easy to move things
instead of selecting them.

That's what shift is for, this starts a new way.
I have one to add:
It is possible to make zero length ways by double clicking on a selected
node, this shouldn't be possible.
