I disagree. Real names should be public. We don't need people who wish
to remain anonymous(*). Community and traceability are far more important.
I can understand hiding e-mail addresses to prevent spam, but not hiding
e-mail addresses for "user privacy" reasons.
To be honest, the thing that surprised me most about this thread was
that I thought it was something that had been agreed and implemented
with the first rails port. I didn't realise it was still possible to
register and not make edits public.
In terms of how it should work, if someone logs in and hasn't set edits
public, they should be presented with a screen with only 2 options.
"Make edits public" and "log out". They should never see potlatch or any
other screens.

* If we start making maps of China, or other places where it might be
illegal to make the map, we might need to allow people to remain
anonymous, but that's a special case. At the moment, we're more likely
to have legal problems because a contributor is anonymous and has
allegedly copied another map, rather than because they aren't.
