I use this tag on a node, mainly for roads and footpaths where a gate is
placed across the highway. On public roads in the UK there are some
locations where a gate is used, mainly in very rural areas, as a means of
livestock control. The same essentially applies to footpaths where a gate
(as opposed to a stile which you climb over) is used to allow foot passage
through fences and walls used for livestock control or land ownership.
