I'm talking about the region around Bergisch Gladbach (near Cologne) in
Germany. Coordinates: 51.01° 7.15°

And yes, I noticed, you tried to touch only segments that were highways.
;-) I went yesterday morning to work with a few new ways in my PDA to
check them, and when I came home, those streets were already of type
unclassifed and I had to delete the conflicts by hand.. :-)

To answer why there are a lot of unwayed segments around my area (of
course not all mapped by me): I had started a similar project to OSM and
was already collecting data (gpx) for at least one year before I heard
of OSM. Unfortunately I focused on the "physical" layer (coordinates) of
the streets, not their name. Therefore I have only a lot of gpx data for
the region. That's why I mapped only segments. I simply do not know the
name or ref for some of the highways and streets.

I'm converting those segments to ways as soon as I have the chance to
visit the locations again, but this is not very often. Using
maps.google.com is not allowed AFAIK and the quality of google maps for
this area is quite poor (wrong names, old map data and so on.)

The problem with unclassified ways is, that one does not really know if
that way is unclassified, or automatically converted from an "work in
progress" bunch of segments.

That's wy I'm suggesting to convert all the segments with an specific
tag and update the validator plugin and maplint accordingly. I'm afraid
that converting the top 100 posted by Frederik(?) only to have less
segments to convert is the wrong way.

Greetings,
Banny
