One simple example would be:
as root:
echo "deb http://www.gpsdrive.de/debian etch main">>/etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get install gpsdrive openstreetmap-utils
mapnik-osm-updater.sh --all-planet-geofabrik=europe
maybe grant rights with mapnik-osm-updater.sh
as user:
gpsdrive
select "mapnik mode"
