It apparently does, though it my experience it doesn't remove even 10%
of the points, so it wouldn't account for the difference (though I did
mostly worse case areas with a lot of detail).
Incidently the simplification seems to try to minimise changes in
lengths which seems wierd, I would have though preserving area was
more important. I tends to (in my experience) convert small squares to
triangles half the size.
