I've started doing detailed mapping of Newmarket, Suffolk (nothing
uploaded yet to see). As some of you may know, Newmarket is a centre of
horse racing, and has some features which , though probably not unique,
are unusual. One of these is that a number of roads have 'gallops'
alongside them. These are a bit like cycleways but for horses - they
have special surfaces, specially constructed crossings and street
furniture. They are there sometimes for exercising the horses, but some
of them simply provide access from the stables near the centre of the
town to the exercising areas on the edge of the town.
I could (probably will) put these in as bridleways, but that doesn't
really capture the essence. We'd normally think of bridleways as tracks
or paths across fields which are open to horses, whereas these are a
specially constructed, much higher quality facility.
I should have taken some photos - I'll do that next time I'm there.
Has anyone else had occasion to map things like this, and have you done
anything special? Any other suggestions? I do want them to be rendered
as they are prominent features of the town.
David
