I think people are suggesting that in this fairly unusual and
potentially damaging case, somewhat more guidance is required :-)

I reject your slippery-slope argument :-) There's a difference between
allowing unknown tags, and the editor choosing to generate a tag which
is pretty certain to be invalid, confusing or both.
