[OSM-talk] Rendering by selecting data based on created date?

I've recently been scheduled up to give a talk at Liverpool LUG
regarding Open Street Map, as one of the points in my talk i'd like to
be able to show the progression of an area, As I had no original plans
for this talk i've not been taking extracts over time.

I've had a idea that i'll be able to take a current extract for my
area, import into a database, then using the node history, extract the
nodes/ways based on the lowest history date.

Has anyone attempted this before? Just want to get a feel for the
situation before I dive in to project.
