Risto,
this is the third time I have received your invitation now.
> I think it's vital for an open source project to communicate with the
> community.
If you care to check out lists.openstreetmap.org, you will see that we
have about 40 (forty) mailing lists already with an estimated total of
5.000 messages monthly. I hope you can resist the temptation of
"inviting" all of them.
OpenStreetMap does not make a distinction between "the project" and "the
community". Our mailing lists do not serve the purpose of "making the
project communicate with the community"; I find this a strange notion.
Is such a distinction usual in OSGeo circles?
Also, OpenStreetMap does not view itself as "an Open Source GPS
project". GPS does play an important role in our project but we're much
more diverse than that.
In fact, I would be very *unhappy* if people started to follow your
suggestion and discuss the details of our software (say, JOSM) on your
mailing list instead of using the means of communication that OSM
already has.
Anyone is welcome to relay any OSM-specific discussion from your list to
a suitable OSM project list but if people have an issue with a piece of
OSM software, I'd ask them to discuss this on the suitable OSM mailing
list and not in some external forum.
So, thanks for the invitation, but no thanks.
Bye
Frederik
