In general

NiMH batteries loose capacity (read efficiency)
when cold (<10 oC), AND loose voltage (slightly)
A problem rises when a GPS has 
 a "low battery switch off" which may
be fooled by that phenomenon.
I owe a Nikon camera (used when mapping) 
that cannot operate on rechargeable
batteries when below 10 degrees, in spite
of a special NiMH battery setting.
It takes 2 or 3 pictures before the camera
switches off with a low battery message.

Back at home everything works fine again.

FWIW I use 2500-2900 mAh NiMH batteries with my 60CSx while hiking in
Iceland, typically in colds around -10 C to -5 C degrees and a pair of
them still seems to last about a day or so.
