AFAIK, the Garmin eTrexes do not suffer from that. Instead, they get funky 
battery capacity readings. I'm used to see the battery indicator full for 80% 
of the time, then drop sharply.  And then, even if it says "battery too low 
for backlight", I can squeeze 30 minutes of backlight from it.
