since working this out have you tried to improve the documentation
that would have made it easier for you?

I assumed anyone used to wikipedia would have tried clicking on the edit link.

The biggest issue for me was when I first looked at OSM it seemed over
whelming, it wasn't clear cut as to how to go from a GPS trace to add
or edit map, even when I started looking into it more serious I was
still a bit bewildered by it all.
