I think I made one or two tiny changes. Wasn't game to make any major
changes at that stage, though I have made suggestions on talk pages. I
really think there needs to be a shift away from talking about GPS'ing to
talking about editing, as the first thing newbies see. They can always
graduate onto GPSing later.

I assumed anyone used to wikipedia would have tried clicking on the edit

I think I just assumed it couldn't possibly be that easy.

I suggest the oldbies try this experience. Go to www.openstreetmap.org and
try and find out how to edit. Likely:
1) Click "help & wiki"
2) Click "Beginners' guide"
3) See "Step 1: Collect data" with a GPS icon.
4) Run screaming.

The biggest issue for me was when I first looked at OSM it seemed over

Yes the wiki hasn't really caught up with how easy it is to contribute to
OSM these days, thanks to the advent of Potlatch and Yahoo/Nearmap. Most of
the info is still geared towards much greater levels of involvement and
commitment.
