Actually, if you used the tiles at a high enough zoom level (z8 maybe)
I think the merkaartor projection wouldn't be a problem because it
only "deforms" the coordinates locally.  Stiching all the tiles into a
big plane and then cutting into the pentagons and triangles that make
up the dodecahedron might work, if I'm not missing some important
fact.
