I dont know if you are aware, but the debian package "iso-codes" already
contains a significant amount of translations of place names etc. (short and
official country names, country subdivisions, cities, scripts, languages,
currencies) into up to 98 languages.

I think these data could be extremely useful for OSM internationalisation,
but it is provided under the GNU LGPL license, which may still be a problem
for the inclusion of this work into OSM - unless the license compatability
is sorted out with FSF (see

or the authors are willing to relicense it under CC-by-SA.
