I don't count "cryptic" (or cryptic enough) as a good attribute for a logo.
What is wrong if there is an association with POIs?
What is wrong with ANY association that is about maps and information on 
them?

That's sad, since my goal is to give something that people like.
How would you describe the essence of OSM for yourself?
