Try the XAPI for those kinds of queries.
This gives me the amenity nodes for Amsterdam and surroundings:
curl -g '
http://xapi.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/node[amenity=*][bbox=4.9,52.2,5.1,52.4]
'
Read up on the XAPI here:

The XAPI can be pretty slow at times.
Alternatively you can download OSM data in JOSM and query it there. JOSM's
query is pretty powerful.
