My concerns would be about making ourselves reliant on something that we
don't control.

Ah right, I misunderstood what you were referring to.
Yes, I have that patch and I started work on reviewing it at the last
hack day. The current state of can be seen in my github repo:
https://github.com/tomhughes/openstreetmap-website/tree/routing
I'll probably continue looking at it at the next hack day, if not before
- there is one other patch set that I also need to look at.
