Incidentally it is already available as a vector layer (GeoJSON or own-format XML) as it happens, e.g.

http://www.free-map.org.uk/0.6/ws/tsvr.php?x=XXX&y=YYY&z=ZZZ&contour=1&format=json

or

http://www.free-map.org.uk/0.6/ws/bsvr.php?bbox=w,s,e,n&inProj=projOfBbox*&outProj=projOfReturnedData*&contour=1&format=json

* supported projections: Spherical Mercator, OSGB, WGS84. So proj can be 27700,4326,900913,3785,3857, or the aliases "google" or "osgb"

Note it's England/Wales only, though.

Nick
