is there a particular reason to use a new key for this, instead of
e.g. natural=mountain_pass (or natural=pass)? There is only few of
these I admit: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=natural%3Dpass

Cheers,
Martin

PS: Just now I saw that the wiki content is much older than what I
thought on first glimpse:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Key:mountain_pass&action=history
you can find the full history here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:mountain_pass&action=history

Admittedly there are historical reasons for this tagging. IMHO it
would still be nicer to have them in natural (which I see a key for
geographical features, e.g. similar to peak). With the current way of
many people doing maps (osm2pgsql without hstore) it creates problems
(new columns) when having a lot of keys (and here there are no values
other than "yes" and a very few quite obsolete "no").
