Here are my 3 no-s: no, it should not be deprecated, no, it is not
pointless, there is benefit, no, it should not be mapped on millions of
building inners regardless of the situation.

There are some courtyards which are significant features on their own, with
properties like names, etc. Having a tag for courtyards does not mean we
want or have to tag all courtyards with the tag (although it would not harm
either).

Here an example for a well known and significant courtyard:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortile_del_Belvedere but there are many more
(although they are few compared to all the courtyards in the world without
names or additional attributes that someone would currently map, agreed)

Here another example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_of_the_Lions

I have rarely been mapping in the muslim world, but am aware that
courtyards play a significant role in the architecture there. Courtyard
houses (see for example WP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtyard_house )
may not be a thing in your home country, but they are in some places of the
world, e.g. in traditional China housing, in traditional mediterranean
housing.

Admittedly, there are or could be different tags for specific courtyards as
well (I did not research this), some examples include the courtyards or
mosques (Sahn)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahn or similarly christian monastery
courtyards.

Cheers,
Martin
