Hi,
I'm happy to announce that OpenStreetMap has been accepted as an
organisation for Google Summer of Code 2022. If you haven't heard
of the program yet, it allows people to receive a stipend to spend
the summer coding on an open source project. It is especially for people
who already have some coding experience but have never contributed to
open source before.
Google has changed the rules this year. Apart from a lot more
flexibility in terms of time management, the most important change is
that this year everybody above the age of 18 can become a GSoC
contributor. No need anymore to be a registered student. The only
constraint is that participants are new to open source in general and
the project they want to participate in particular.
We, as the OSM orga would be particularly happy to
find people from the OSM community, who are already familiar with OSM
and mapping. Maybe you have an itch to scratch with the software you
already use as a mapper or data user? Then GSoC is a good opportunity
to learn how to get involved.
There are a couple of project ideas listed in the wiki:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2022/Project_ideas
These are ideas the maintainers of the projects think particularly
suitable for GSoC. If you have other ideas what you would like to work
on, please get in touch either with the GSoC orga at gsoc-orga at openstreetmap.org
or with the maintainers of the specific projects. We'll see how it fits
into the GSoC scheme.
For more information on GSoC, see https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/
For more information on specifics for participating with an OpenStreetMap
project, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/2022
The deadline for proposals is April 19th.
Please also spread the word in your local communities. We'd be happy to
see a diverse participation.
Sarah
