if this is an argument, we could outsource everything to wikidata and just have a wikidata tag on all objects, nothing else.

IMHO these can either be autogenerated in a simple way, hence would not need to be tagged, or there could be various possibilities but one is more common and this has to be decided individually so it should be stored. It seems that at least sometimes the latter is the case.

In any case they are super important if you want to read the map in an area where you cannot read the script, and there are frequently political topics associated with names, hence we should not rely on wikidata in the essential field of names.
