The change was necessary because the software used for (in particular) 
the help site is no longer supported.  The admins have done an awful lot 
of work just to "keep the lights on" there. There has been a significant 
amount of discussion, particularly over the last couple of years, over 
what to do about it; see e.g.

https://github.com/openstreetmap/operations/issues/377 .

I suggest that you have a read of those links to understand why we are 
where we are.

Whilst I agree that it's simply not possible to read _everything_ 
written around and about OSM, you can't then complain "why wasn't I 
consulted?" when discussion has been ongoing and decisions made over the 
course of a couple of years.
