In English I would translate a French patisserie to a cake shop, although patisserie is a crossover word that would be understood by most native English speakers.

A pastry shop I would expect to see pies, sausage rolls and pasties, and would tend to call that a bakery, certainly the one a few doors away makes those along with bread but certainly doesn't make cakes.
