[Tile-serving] Renderd and building a tile server from components

I am working on writing a new guide for switch2osm for building a tileserver
from components
So far I've got
- postgresql 9.3 + postgis 2.1 from apt.postgresql.org
- osm2pgsql from ppa:kakrueger/openstreetmap
- mapnik from ppa:mapnik/v2.2.0
- node.js from ppa:chris-lea/node.js
- carto from npm
- openstreetmap-carto
Now I've come to the tough two parts: renderd and tilemill.
I've decided on tilemill from source because building it is easy and I've
dealt with a number of questions which boiled down to the tilemill PPA
bringing in other versions of some libraries.
What I'm not sure about is renderd. I am reluctant to use the
ppa:kakrueger/openstreetmap PPA. I have found that frequently I have to
go with a mapnik source other than this PPA if I want to use stuff like
carto, tilemill, etc, hence me using the mapnik/v2.2.0 PPA.
I'm interested in thoughts on the best way to manage this. I'm not
opposed to instructing to build renderd from source, but there are a few
things to consider
- Interactions with package management
- Increased difficulty, particularly of renderd setup
- Upgrading, both of renderd and packages on which it depends
