Ah, I misread the whole issue. Osmium checks the validity in 4326 and throws away anything invalid. But a valid 4326 polygon might still be invalid after projecting, so it has to be checked *again*. So my comment above makes no sense, since a polygon that is broken will not even make it this far; this extra check is only about polygons that are valid in OSM in 4326 but break when projecting to whatever the user of osm2pgsql has asked for. Which means that using some code to try and repair a polygon would not hurt here. Sorry for the confusion.
