Haven't looked into this, yet. Note to myself: crawling through issues and PRs I found [these](https://github.com/openstreetmap/mod_tile/issues/172) [two](https://github.com/openstreetmap/mod_tile/issues/172), which might be interesting to check out while diving into this.
