I've been using this lossy way/node index in production for several months here at Geofabrik. It has been fantastic for reducing disk space when you have a ~1TB NVMe disk for PostgreSQL. I don't record the precise times, so I can't tell you about how much “longer” it makes things, but I haven't noticed anything, nor any other issues.
