This discussion is getting a bit sidetracked.. but anyway current day tar
archivers treat absolute paths as relative. I.e. by default they create
the directory hierarchy below working directory even if the archive itself
contains a /-referenced path. The same should apply to double dots (..)
etc tricks with the path.
Anyway skipping uploading (and rendering) of empty tiles sounds like a
good idea.
