I'm all for discarding PHP wherever possible but there may be
uploaders who cannot use FTP uploads due to firewall restrictions.
Then again, maybe we shouldn't aim to be the 1001st project to flout
established Internet practices and do everything through port 80 ;-)
Hm. Could we let clients upload the tiles directly (i.e. to their
final destination in the file system) and instead of running a
detached zip file processor simply run a detached FTP server logfile
processor that creates metadata from there?
Can somebody fill me in on the amount of metadata we currently store?
I once suggested that one MySQL row per tileset should be enough but
I think this was rejected because of insufficient granularity
concerning empty tiles, is that correct? And what became of the idea
of cascading metadata, where you would only have metadata for tiles
at zoom n if that metadata differs from the metadata for the
containing n-1 tile? Has that been rejected because of too many read
accesses on extracting metadata?
Bye
Frederik
