OK, we are running t at h on php5 now :-). I made sure MapOf works. Also Uploads still work, metadata is inserted correctly and blank tiles are displayed correctly. let me know if you experience any irregularities.
I don't know whether this saves any CPU (probably not), but given that PHP4 is horribly outdated I thought it was worth a try.
