[Tilesathome] Overall Status

Hi,
my personal view of the "state of tiles at home":
* We're still in "limp mode" and more or less have been ever since
around May this year.
* A large proportion of uploads does not go through on first attempt,
the server cannot be said to be working properly.
* Coastline and blue ocean tiles still leave a lot to be desired
(starting view of UK + surrounding water on informationhighway.org shows
strange artifacts) but server overload makes systematic work on these
problems difficult.
* Tile statistics not updated
* No automated checking of the currency of tiles is done
* Tile read access (slippymap) has improved through proxies
* cycle at home layer dead in the water because everybody knows that the
system will break completely if we add a third layer
* Memory upgrade on dev promised but not yet installed
* OJW still the only one doing t at h administration, and NickH (obviously)
still the only one doing dev administration, both well-meaning but still
in bottleneck positions. (I haven't even managed to get a dev account
during the last 3 weeks... will send another mail to NickH.)
I know a lot of this is partly my fault, as I was the one who introduced
the maplint layer as well as the whole coastline thing, both of which
surely increased the bandwidth and disk space we're using.
Sadly, with the sorry state the server's in at the moment, I doubt many
people will have the motivation to fix coastlines or indeed think about
anything interesting to do with tiles at home. If tiles at home had been in
this state when I begun working on it a few months ago, I would probably
have found myself something else to play with.
This is just so that nobody thinks because the list is quiet, the
project must be working fine.
Bye
Frederik
