I did some further render-testing and I came up with 3 versions now:

That one has rounded casings and non-rounded cores. This is what the 
patch has produced since I wrote it.

This one has rounded casing and rounded cores. May look nice to some, I 
still like the cr.png

Non-rounded casings and non-rounded cores (just like residentials). I 
thought this one should look better but somehow the casings are not 
really dashed the last times - strange. Even changing the values of the 
"stroke-dasharray" didn't make it better.
The really odd thing about this: At the beginning of all streets the 
casing looks rounded and continues non-rounded though only one 
style-definition is used.

Does anyone like any of those three?
