I wanted to develop a solution with avoided the postgresql step (which was 
awkward to configure), and go from OSM to mapnik via shapefiles instead. 
Part of this is for Freemap but part of it is to develop an easy solution 
that anyone who wants their own custom Mapnik/OSM maps can use without too 
much awkward configuration.
