As announced on IRC before such a thing is indeed being thought about.

on the tile URL that can be solved with keeping the old url for standard
Tiles, and using a different (instead of the tiles.php part for example)
URL path for the other layers.

For requesting tiles the request url can be easily made to contain
another "layer" parameter that gets assigned a default value if unset.

so basically I don't see any problem there.

If diskspace is an issue, I have a 160 GB Samsung P-ATA (SP1614N) Drive
to spare for the server...
