If tile has the capacity, then definitely do it. Mapnik shouldn't be
depending on a server that is supposed to be for beta testing things,
and is often overloaded. If it helps reduce the load on dev, that is
only a bonus.

When RichardF looked at top on dev the other day, he said that mysql and
Postgres were at the top, but no one on IRC knew why postgres was even
running.
