[OSM-dev] What about sharing basic rendering rules and using SLD?

There are currently at least three rendering tools, Mapnik, Osmarender and
Kosmos and all are struggling to remain updated on all these keys.
=> What about sharing symbolization (= rendering) rules among all renderers?
There are already some examples around like in Kosmos, where it says that
"people are sharing their rendering rules in Category:Kosmos rules" (c.f.
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/KosmosStandardRules ). These rules
could be overwritten by local/specialized ones (as proposed by ISO 19117 -
Portrayal). But what's lacking in all these examples I've seen so far, is a
rendering priority, a symbology and - before all - a machine readable common
syntax.
=> So, what about using SLD? (See e.g.
http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/SLD+Snippets). Out of SLD one could
then generate standard rendering rules for all three tools.
Any comments or proposals on this?
