Well there is also the WikiMaps project and we have an opportunity now to
improve the iD background layer menu so that we expose the entire wikimaps
catalogue. This could also attract a whole new group of people to OSM.
Unfortunately I'm not a developer, but even if I was, I've been put of from
contributing to OSM given recent experiences.

p.s. I do differ in your opinion about iD as I see the importance of
getting something "live" in a timely manner. I do however feel that they
should not have marked it as the default quick as quickly as they did.
