Hi Paolo
First of all get familiar with the Import guidelines. There are several steps necessary in order to do an import in OSM.
It takes a while to get through it, but don't get scared, importing is possible in OSM :)
I did a preliminary check of the data you mentioned.
First good news is that it's licence is ODbL compatible, so it can be imported into OSM :)
The quality of the (*.shp) data seems to be good and is easy readable with JOSM (no QGIS needed for converting).
There are in sum over 2k of objects available in England with some ~130 in Sussex alone.
What will be some sort of a challenge is integrating the imported data with preexisting data.
In some cases the difference in already mapped LNR's and the government data is quite big - e.g. Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has got a significantly different outline than in OSM.
If you got further questions you can contact me directly through OSM private message to my user account or to my email.
Best regards!

Dear all,
I am new to this. My area of interest is the county of Sussex in the UK.
Open Street Map displays the boundaries of many of the UK Local Nature Reserves (LNR). For example, you can search for the Beacon Hill, Ladies Mile and Whitehawk Hill LNRs. However, other LNRs are not on OSM. See for example, Bevendean Down Local Nature Reserve. I have been led to believe that we can import from data.gov.uk although I have never done this before. Would someone be able to help me with this? I'd very much like to know how we can get this rectified. There are other LNRs that are not on it too. If it is a question of doing it ourselves, I would be happy to learn how to do it and would be happy to receive guidance via a manual or a video conference or whatever.
Many thanks, Paolo
