Yes! I'm an AutoCAD user, too, and I make great use of that
functionality. I don't understand the objections to it; I guess I'd
have to see an example. I guess one problem is that AutoCAD doesn't
use "nodes" for its lines, so we'd have to somehow resolve that. Maybe
dragging a bounding box would select ways only by default, but
dragging with a modifier key would select nodes (only?). I dunno, I
haven't used JOSM a whole lot.

I do think it should be more difficult to *move* ways than it
currently is, though. That should be a rare operation (and it's easy
to screw up/move a lot of nodes) so I think it justifies a modifier
key.
