[OSM-newbies] GPS receiver recommendation

Hi,

I've got what I suspect is a really annoying newbie question. I want to 
buy a GPS receiver to start doing some mapping in my local area. I've 
looked at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/GPS_Reviews and 
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Garmin but I've no idea what 
sort I need.

I suspect I'll do most of my mapping on foot and sometimes, but not very 
often, as a car passenger. Never on a bike! I only use Linux, so I need 
to be able to get data off without relying on Windows software. I think 
I need a standalone unit, because I don't want to have to carry a laptop 
round with me, although I do have a Sony Ericsson P900 mobile phone, so 
maybe there are other options.

Can anyone give me some recommendations as to what type I should be 
looking at? Thanks very much in advance.
