[OSM-newbies] Request for help with osmarender on the desktop

I am sorry if this is an oft-repeated request for help. I am trying to get
osmarender to work on my desktop pc. I have downloaded the osmarender.xsl
standard.xml and svg style files and placed them in the same directory. I
have saved some osm data in a file named data.osm and fired up Firefox
2.0.0.3, pointed it at standard.xml ...
and hey presto keep getting "Error during XSLT transformation: An unknown
XPath extension function was called."

In desperation, I downloaded xmlstarlet and tried that, but no good. What am
I doing wrong?
Any help gratefully appreciated as I would love to start rendering some maps
myself.
