[OSM-newbies] Upside-down street names

I notice that when I generate an svg file with xmlstarlet and osmarender,
some of the street names are rendered upside down. I assume that this is a
result of right-to-left ways when editing on josm. This does not appear to
be a problem with osm/osmarender online.

Is there a convention about direction of ways - ie should east-west ways be
directional left-to-right (except for oneway streets obviously)? Similarly
should north-south ways be bottom-to-top or top-to-bottom? I haven't come
across mention of this in the wiki.

Is there a convention about cul-de-sacs ie direction of way towards or away
from the closed end?
