  Subject: [OSM-newbies] Upside-down street names

I notice that when I generate an svg file with xmlstarlet and osmarender, some of the street names are rendered upside down. I assume that this is a result of right-to-left ways when editing on josm. This does not appear to be a problem with osm/osmarender online.

Is there a convention about direction of ways - ie should east-west ways be directional left-to-right (except for oneway streets obviously)? Similarly should north-south ways be bottom-to-top or top-to-bottom? I haven't come across mention of this in the wiki.

Is there a convention about cul-de-sacs ie direction of way towards or away from the closed end?

  Jon

In general it is best to draw the segments left to right (east to west). If this is nor possible (perhaps because it is a one way street) then use the tag and key nameDirection=-1 (see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Osmarender/Tips ).

The online tiles at home files have some pre-processing done on them to help name rendering which is why this issue mo longer arises with the online tiles.
