[OSM-newbies] JOSM colors & mappaint

Make sure you've clicked on the data layer in the layers panel in the  
top right (if it's not there, select it by pressing the 7th button  
down on the toolbar on the left).

Alternatively go to Preferences (Edit -> Preferences) and deselect  
"Draw inactive layers in other colour".
